Mary is an experienced leader and facilitator of classes, workshops, quiet days and retreats. As Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Theology at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, she regularly teaches classes on desert and Celtic Christian spirituality, rule of life and Benedictine spirituality, the arts and the life of faith, and prayer in the contexts of illness and suffering. She also offers online classes on desert spirituality, Celtic spirituality and living with illness.
In
September of 2003 she was awarded the
Durstan R
McDonald Award for
Excellence in Teaching by the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest.
Mary and
Sylvia Maddox, her co-author for Holy Companions: Spiritual Practices
from the Celtic Saints and Praying with the Celtic Saints,
often team up to lead workshops and retreats using material from the
Celtic tradition. They created a workshop entitled “Often Goes
Christ in the Stranger’s Guise: St. Brigit and Hospitality,"
which was presented at the Triennial Meeting of Episcopal Church
Women.
Mary
has a life-long love of nature. She is a member of the Nature
Conservancy and practices wildscape and herb gardening at
their home in San Antonio. She also supports Last Chance Forever,
a Bird of Prey conservancy. She has "adopted" a river
otter on the Isle of Skye, a Ridley turtle, and several wild birds of
prey, including a screech owl, barred owl and red shouldered hawk, which she
